This course is designed to introduce you to the basic skills of counselling that can help you support and assist others in various contexts, such as volunteering or working. This course does not qualify you as a counsellor, but it can help you develop your helping skills and explore whether you want to pursue further training in counselling.

Course attendance
As a reminder, all students need to maintain a 90% minimum attendance rate throughout the course. This means that you should plan your holidays carefully.

Entry Requirements
- This course requires a significant amount of writing, so you need to have a Level 2 (GCSE A-C) in Literacy (or equivalent). Otherwise, you will have to do a written exercise to demonstrate your skills.
- You also need to be willing to share your thoughts and feelings with others, either in a group setting, individually with other students or tutors, or in written form.
- You need to be open to giving and receiving feedback from others in the group, as this is an essential part of the learning process.
- You need to be committed to exploring your own values, beliefs, and attitudes, and examining how you relate to other people.
- You need to be dedicated to the learning process and completing the necessary homework to meet the requirements of the course.
- If you have any current emotional or psychological problems, then you are not eligible for this course.
- If you are going through any significant life events, then you may not be suitable for this course.
- You need to have basic computer skills (word processing and sending emails) and access to a printer to print your work for the portfolio.
Course Content
This course is designed to help you learn through experience and observation, and to foster your personal growth and self-awareness. You will be expected to participate in various activities and exercises that will challenge you to reflect on your own strengths, weaknesses, values, beliefs, and goals. You will also have the opportunity to observe and interact with others who may have different perspectives and backgrounds from you. By engaging in this course, you will develop a deeper understanding of yourself and others and enhance your professional skills and competencies.
The course contains the following units: -
1. Using basic counselling skills within the limits of a helping role
2. Establishing a helping interaction
3. Communicating understanding of other person’s concerns
4. Focusing on the person’s agenda
5. Understanding the importance of self-awareness in helping work
6. Using different types of listening and responding skills in a helping interaction
7. Using review and feedback to evaluate helping skills
Assessment
This course requires you to create a written e-portfolio of work that demonstrates your learning outcomes, your personal development journey, and your evidence for the CPCAB criteria specified in the Candidate Learning Record (CLR). This e-portfolio is an essential part of the course assessment, and you need to complete it in order to pass the course.
Additional Study Time
This course requires you to dedicate some extra time for studying and completing assignments. The recommended amount is 4 hours a week, but this may vary depending on your individual needs and circumstances. Before you enrol, you should carefully evaluate your availability and capacity to balance this course with your other responsibilities, such as work, family, health, etc. This will help you avoid stress and achieve your learning goals.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be eligible to apply for the CPCAB Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills, which is a nationally recognised qualification that will further develop your knowledge and skills in this field.
